Night Before August The second novel in the Dun Wheeling series finds Dun over his head as he gets involved with the FBI and the US Marshals. Dun struggles to protect a man in the witness protection program who has professional killers trying to erase his shadow. A man who Dun discovers is the former love of the woman Dun adors...but who has disappeared. Torn between duty and love, his instincts drive him through a web of deceit and murder. Dun soon finds he has taken on far more than he intended, including a voluptuous young woman out to seduce him. Here's an except from Night Before August (serious side): Sally Olivia Sawgrass awoke with a start. The room was dark, except for a narrow crack of light under the door. She strained her ears, but the only sound she could hear was her own breathing through the double surgical mask tightly covering her face. A scream erupted from her mouth, only to be muffled like a bullet passing through a silencer. As the fog in her brain began to clear, a rush of panic washed over her body. She couldn't move, sit up, flee from wherever she was being held. Her arms and legs were restrained with webbed straps secured to the sides of the hospital bed. The collars attached to her limbs were padded with thick foam to prevent bruising. And she was naked.
And another (lighter side):
The swapping of war
stories went on until the waitress returned to the table and looked
at Knott. "Are you done,
sir?" No, I'm Knott. He's
Dun." The waitress turned
toward Dun and started to remove his plate. "Hey! I'm not
finished yet," Dun said as he retrieved his plate from her
hands. "Oh, I'm sorry, sir.
I thought he said you were done." "I am." Dun plunged
his fork into the chicken salad and hefted a large
mouthful. The waitress paused
for a moment, then started to turn away. "Miss?" Knott said.
"I'm finished." The waitress turned
around and gave Knott a quizzical look. "But, sir, you just said you
weren't done." "Right. I'm Knott.
He's Dun.
Dun runs into a long-lost friend from high school who is now a senior agent with the FBI. Dun finds that friendship, however, doesn't mix with murder, treachery, and greed in this fast paced novel--an easy read that's hard to put down.
