An excerpt from Sphere of Reason (not so serious)

He looked up when he heard Claire enter the room and sucked in his breath at the sight. She was dressed very conservatively in capris jeans, a v-necked knit top, and sandals. Small loop earrings and a short strand of wooden beads completed her outfit. She had her hair pulled back into a simple ponytail.

It wasn’t what she was wearing as much as how she wore it. He’d seen lots of women that must have soaked in a tub of scalding oil for three hours before they poured themselves into their slacks. The same with their tight skimpy tops that left little to the imagination. They saw themselves as voluptuous and seductive; Dun saw them as overweight and out of shape.

Claire’s outfit, on the other hand, left a lot to the imagination. Everything was amply covered, yet there were clues here and there that promised plush velvet treasures wrapped in pure silk.

An excerpt on the serious side

Just then, she thought she heard a noise near the front door. She was about to ignore it when she heard the sound again. A kind of scratching noise.

She eased back into the living room and crept over to her purse. A can of pepper spray was stored in a side pocket. She quietly removed it and then glided across the carpet to the side of the main door.

It was probably nothing. She was just tense and her imagination was running wild. She strained her ears, heard nothing, and turned to walk away from the door when she saw it open a crack.

She couldn’t believe it. This couldn’t be happening! Without thinking, she raised the pepper spray, aimed at the door, and pressed the release button. In the distance, she heard someone screaming. It turned out to be her.

Tongue-in-cheek humor, murder, mystery, and steamy women make Castles of Deceit another Dun Wheeling novel that's hard to put down.
